Beginning in 2004, the member states of the Eurozone were permitted to issue commemorative 2 euro circulation coins showing a different national design from the standard euro circulation coin design, most often commemorating a special event or personality. The number of issues should be limited to one per issuing state per year, even though this has not always been the case. Commemorative coins have legal tender status throughout the euro area.
