This issue celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Portuguese Constitution, which acts as a pillar of democracy, enshrining rights and freedoms, and guaranteing the separation of powers and popular sovereignty.
The Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, adopted on April 2, 1976, and effective April 25, 1976, is the supreme law of the Third Portuguese Republic. Drafted by the Constituent Assembly following the 1974 Carnation Revolution, it replaced the authoritarian Estado Novo 1933 Constitution to establish a democratic state based on the rule of law.
The design evokes the female figure of the Republic and the Parliament building - both symbols of Portuguese democracy. |
