Carlo Lorenzini, better known by the pen name Carlo Collodi, was an Italian author, humourist, and journalist, widely known for his fairy tale novel "The Adventures of Pinocchio: The Story of a Puppet" (1883) about the mischievous adventures of an animated marionette named Pinocchio.
The original version of "The Adventures of Pinocchio: The Story of a Puppet" is a dark, violent cautionary tale where the puppet is selfish and disobedient. He faces many perils and temptations, meets characters who teach him about life, and learns goodness before he achieves his heart's desire to become a real boy. Since its first publication, it has inspired many works of fiction, such as Walt Disney's animated version, and commonplace ideas such as a liar's long nose.
The obverse features the hero of Carlo Collodi's masterpiece, "The Adventures of Pinocchio: The Story of a Puppet", dancing, with his shadow gazing on in astonishment at the talking cricket on the tip of his long nose, which grows from telling lies. Also found are the twelve stars of the European Union.
The reverse is the standard pan-European reverse of the €2 coin.
