The Italian Republic (Repubblica Italiana) was formed after a constitutional referendum and general election on June 2, 1946, in which Italian women voted for the very first time and which ended the monarchy. Universal suffrage granted all citizens aged 21 and older the right to vote and run for office. Today, Italy operates as a parliamentary republic under a constitution adopted on January 1, 1948.

The obverse shows the female form of a young Italy with outstretched arms, holding in her right hand the star from the emblem of the Italian Republic from which rays of light emanate as symbols of greatness. Italy is depicted within a circle and a square, symbolizing heaven and earth, stability and power. The inscriptions translate to "80th Anniversary" and "Italian Republic".

The reverse features the faces of three women from three different generations, with the star of the Italian Republic on the right, from which rays of light radiate, an image evoking the conquest of the right to vote. The inscriptions say “FORZA DI DONNA” (strength of woman), ”LUCE DI GIUSTIZIA” (light of justice), and “DIRITTO DI VOTO” (right to vote). At the bottom "1946" and "2026", respectively the year of the birth of the Italian Republic and the first time Italian women voted, separated by the image of a scale, symbol of social justice.
