This year the Irish proof set marks the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The set includes all Irish euro coin denominations from 1c to €2, as well as the only available proof version of the commemorative 2 euro celebrating the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

This special 2€ coin contains a unique design based on a logarithmic spiral found in nature from flower petals to galaxies and symbolizing growth and intimating dynamism and movement. Each individual arm of the spiral features 27 discs to symbolize the 27 Member States of the EU, with resulting white space at the centre forming a five-point star, a symbol from the EU flag.

From July to December of this year, Ireland will hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. For six months, Ireland will guide negotiations, help deliver EU laws and policies and broker agreements between the Member States. This will be the eighth time Ireland has held the rotating Presidency since its accession to the Union, a responsibility that reflects our enduring commitment to partnership, cooperation and progress in Europe.
