This coin is the fifth and last in a five-part series, “In Service to Society”, which will have one coin issued every year during the period 2022-2026, and highlights the significance of particular groups of professions that are essential to the functioning of society and all of our lives as an expression of respect and appreciation.

All releases in the series feature a polymer ring in a color that is characteristic for the respective occupational group.

Emergency medical services in Germany are a central component of public safety and health. They ensure that professional help arrives quickly in medical emergencies – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Their tasks include emergency rescue, patient transport, and, in the event of major incidents, supporting the fire department and disaster relief organizations. These services are primarily provided by aid organizations such as the German Red Cross, the Johanniter, the Malteser, and the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB), but also by municipal emergency medical services and private providers. Emergency physicians and specially trained paramedics treat patients at the scene and decide on further measures. Emergency medical services are therefore an indispensable pillar of the healthcare system and make a significant contribution to protecting the population.

The obverse depicts the events of a life-saving emergency response, framed by a representation of rescue vehicles, ambulances, and a rescue helicopter. A fine ECG line forms the horizon of the image, terminating at the right edge of the coin with the emergency vehicle and the Europe-wide emergency number 112. The polymer ring does not define the boundaries but is an integral part of the scene, both within and around the coin..

The reverse, which will be used for all coins in the series, features an eagle framed by the words “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND”, the value and denomination, the year 2024, the twelve stars of Europe and the mint mark “A” (Berlin), “D” (Munich), “F” (Stuttgart), “G” (Karlsruhe) or “J” (Hamburg), depending on where the coin was struck.
