Monnaie de Paris unveils the first coin in the French Genius trilogy, inspired by one of the Republic's iconic figures: the Genius of Liberty, commonly known as the Genius of the Bastille.
The design is based on the sculpture by Auguste Dumont in 1836 to crown the July Column in Place de la Bastille in Paris. The Genius is depicted naked with angel wings. In his right hand, he proudly brandishes a torch, symbolising the light that will guide the people, while his left hand grasps a broken chain, an allegory of liberation.
Inspired by the 100-franc “Fraternité” coins (1988), the reverse side, common to the trilogy, highlights the French national motto. The original trunk is replaced here by a bundle, a powerful symbol of the Republic, topped with a Phrygian cap, emblem of order and freedom.
