In 2026, the French Navy celebrates its 400th anniversary. This issue pays tribute to the sailors who work tirelessly to protect the French people on all the oceans.

The French Navy is celebrating its 400th anniversary in 2026, marking four centuries of maritime history originating from the Edict of October 1626 under Cardinal Richelieu and King Louis XIII. It is one of the oldest continuously serving navies globally, pioneering innovations like the first ocean-going ironclad warship (La Gloire) and early operational submarines.

The obverse features a sailor seen from behind, wearing a pea coat, symbol of the institution, topped with a colorized “bâchi”, the legendary headgear of the French Navy. The coin also depicts the various ships and aircrafts used by the French Navy.

The reverse shows the face value, surrounded by two branches — one oak, the other laurel — evoking the symbol of the Euro, framed by the words “République Française” along with a set of lines representing the Hexagon.
