August Šenoa (1838-1881) was a Croatian novelist, critic, editor, poet, and dramatist who urged the modernization and improvement of Croatian literature and led its transition from Romanticism to Realism.

Introducing the historical novel to Croatian literature, Šenoa contributed to the growing sense of national identity among the Croatian people in Austria-Hungary. He also wrote on contemporary social themes, claiming that literature should educate the public and promote progressive social and political struggles.

The obverse features an image of August Šenoa, a writer who left a profound mark on Croatian literature and on the cultural life of the 19th century. As an author whose name grew beyond the boundaries of literature itself, Šenoa remains permanently inscribed in Croatia’s cultural heritage, and the period of his work is still known today as the Šenoa era.

The reverse features the Stone Gate, one of Zagreb’s most recognisable landmarks, closely associated with the world of Šenoa’s best-known novel, “The Goldsmith’s Gold”. In this way, a strong link is created between Šenoa’s literary legacy and the city he so deeply shaped through his work.
