This release honors Queen Jelena the Glorious, one of the most important women of the Croatian early medieval period.

Jelena the Glorious was the queen consort of the Kingdom of Croatia, as the wife of King Michael Krešimir II, from 946 to 969, a period which was marked by "peace, order and expeditious growth". She was the regent of Croatia after the death of her spouse during the minority of her son Stephen Držislav of Croatia, and ruled from 969 until 976.

The obverse shows Queen Jelena as the patron saint of the poor, widows and orphans, whose name has been preserved on the stone fragments of the sarcophagus found in St Mary's, where she was buried next to her husband upon her death in 976.

The reverse is adorned with Velebit degenia – a plant that grows from stone and symbolizes strength and steadfastness, just like the memory of Queen Jelena the Glorious.
