The grounds of the Japan Mint contain many different varieties of flowering cherry trees. Every year, during the cherry blossom (sakura) season, a path through its grounds approximately 560 m long is opened to the public for cherry blossom viewing. This event is known as “Sakura-no-toorinuke,” literally meaning walking through the cherry blossom, because people walk along a one-way path while viewing the cherry blossoms. Since its inception, it has remained popular as one of Hiroshima’s best-loved spring traditions.

The cherry blossom of the year is Omuro-ariake. Omuro-ariake is an unusually small, late-blooming cherry blossom variety that has a delicious scent that is quite immersive. The Omuro-ariake cherry blossom is associated with Kyoto’s Ninna-ji Temple, one of Japan’s great cherry blossom destinations, where it is one of the predominant types of flowering cherry on display.
