The grounds of the Japan Mint contain many different varieties of flowering cherry trees. Every year, during the cherry blossom (sakura) season, a path through its grounds approximately 560 m long is opened to the public for cherry blossom viewing. This event is known as “Sakura-no-toorinuke,” literally meaning walking through the cherry blossom, because people walk along a one-way path while viewing the cherry blossoms. Since its inception in 1883, it has remained popular as one of Osaka’s best-loved spring traditions.

The cherry blossom of the year is Gyoiko, Gyoiko is a rare, late-blooming cherry blossom variety that blooms with unique yellow-green petals instead of the usual pink. The word Gyoiko refers to the "yellow-green court robes" worn by ancient Japanese nobles. People have cultivated this tree since the Edo period in Japan. Records of it date back to at least 1780.
