This issue is a tribute to Raili and Reima Pietilä, two of the most influential architects in Finland during the 1960’s.

A defining characteristic of their architecture was its deep relationship with nature and the surrounding landscape. Rather than imposing geometric forms onto a site, they wanted to create buildings that responded to topography, climate, vegetation, and local materials. Their designs often appear to grow organically from the terrain, blending natural and built environments into a unified whole. They have become one of the most internationally known Finnish architects. A number of their well-known works are the Kaleva Church in Tampere, the Finnish Pavilion at the Brussels World’s Fair and the Sauna at Hvitträsk in Kirkkonummi.

The obverse shows one of their most important buildings, Dipoli, now in the hands of Aalto University but originally owned by the Helsinki University of Technology. The Mercury Staff is also visible.

The reverse shows the inside of a tree trunk, seen from above. This refers to the organic materials that symbolize the style of Raili and Reima Pietilä as architects. .
