Celebrate the life and legacy of George Orwell with a coin that portrays key themes of Orwell’s writings on the reverse.
George Orwell was the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair (1903-1950), an English novelist, essayist, critic, and journalist. He's best known for his dystopian novels Animal Farm (1945) and Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949), which remain popular classics and offer a trenchant critique of totalitarianism. Orwell's work is characterized by clear prose, strong political views, and opposition to all forms of totalitarianism.
The reverse features the inscription ‘BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU’, a quote taken from 1984, which encircles what looks like an eye, but is in fact a cleverly inserted camera lens. ‘THERE WAS TRUTH AND THERE WAS UNTRUTH’, another quote from 1984, serves as the coin’s edge inscription.
