In 2010 the Spanish Royal Mint started a series of 2 euro commemorative coins dedicated to the Spanish sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
This is the 16th issue in the annual series dedicated to Spanish sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and features the Old City of Salamanca.
Salamanca is well-known for its well-preserved Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture, particularly around the Plaza Mayor and the university.
Salamanca is a vibrant city with a rich history, home to one of Europe's oldest universities and numerous historical and religious monuments, among them the Convento de San Esteban which is a Dominican monastery of Plateresque style, situated in the Plaza del Concilio de Trento in Salamanca, Castile and León.
