In 2023, a new series of collector coins - Jewels of the Casa de la Moneda Museum - was launched. In 2025, the Royal Spanish Mint has released the second wave of these numismatic restrike gems.
All of the coins featured in this series of restrikes are on display at the Casa de la Moneda Museum in Madrid.
Spanish numismatic history is characterized by immense international influence driven by vast New World silver and gold resources derived from Spanish colonization. Spanish coins were once among the most widely circulated coinage in world, and Spanish silver coins remained legal tender in the United States until 1857.
This coin is one of the earliest 8 reales pieces struck following the monetary reform of 1771, which brought a complete redesign of coin types in both Spain and Spanish America. This reform introduced the monarch’s portrait on silver and copper coins and also established distinct designs for the so-called provincial silver—coins minted in Spain using lower fineness silver— differentiating them from the so-called national silver or plata gruesa, struck in the Americas for overseas trade.
The reverse features the crowned Coat of Arms of Spain, as well as an inscription, mint marks and date. The obverse shows a bust of Carlos III with inscriptions.
