Italy's Capital of Culture for 2025 is the Sicilian town of Agrigento, represented through some of its priceless and timeless artistic treasures: the Dioscuri temple, the leonine dripstone, the Akragas coin and the Ephebe, a masterpiece of Greek sculpture from the 5th century BC.
The series shines a light on specific regions and historic cities in terms of tourism, events, and performing arts.
The obverse shows the remains of the Temple of the Dioscuri dating back to the 1st century BC. To the right, we find a drainpipe with a lion's head, representing the mastery of Greek architects.
The reverse depicts the Ephebe of Agrigento, considered one of the masterpieces of Greek sculpture. At the bottom is a coin depicting a crab, which typically circulated in ancient Agrigento called Akragas .
