Erected in the 12th century at the instigation of Bishop Maurice de Sully, Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral is a jewel of Gothic architecture that has dominated the Île de la Cité for over eight centuries.
This architectural masterpiece, characterized by its slender buttresses and flamboyant rose windows, bears witness to the skills of medieval builders and has been the scene of many major historical events, such as the coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte.
Today, it remains a place of religious and intellectual pilgrimage, attracting millions of visitors from all over the world, making it the most visited monument in France and Europe.
The obverse features a depiction of the cathedral's west façade, with its rose window emerging between the two towers. The official Notre-Dame de Paris logo also appears against the listel.
The reverse is the 2€ common reverse to all countries in Europe. The face value "2 euro" appears in front of the map of Europe. |
