Every three years since 2008, Monnaie de Paris has revisited classic designs that honor and feature revered symbols of French numismatics.
Entitled “Ors de France,” 2023 began a series of three historical and emblematic coins that have greatly contributed to French numismatic heritage during the Imperial era.
The design of the first issue highlighted the coinage of France’s Second Empire and featured the effigy of Emperor Napoleon III. The second release featured the reign (1610–1643) of King Louis XIII (1601–1643) during which time France underwent a significant monetary reform.
This third and last release shows an reinterpretation of the historic Franc à Cheval, an iconic coin based on the gold denomination issued in December 1360 for King Jean II, known as “le Bon”. Featuring the monarch on horseback charging into battle, this coin was struck to celebrate the liberation of the sovereign who was captured by the English during the Hundred Years' War, hence the name “Franc” meaning “Free”.
The reverse is common to the entire series and highlights the three eras to which the inspirations of this trilogy belong.
