This release celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Tour de France finishing on the Champs-Elysées.
The Tour de France is the most famous cycling race in the world. It was first organized in 1903 by the newspaper L'Auto, with the aim of stimulating the public and, above all, winning over its rival Le Vélo. Today, it is the 3rd most watched sporting event in the world, after the Football (Soccer) World Cup and the Olympic Games.
In the first Tour of 1903, the finish was at Ville-d'Avray. From 1904 to 1967 it was at the Parc des Princes track and from 1968 to 1974, during the heyday of Eddy Merckx, at the Vélodrome de Vincennes. For 1975, Félix Lévitan, co-director of the Tour, and reporter Yves Mourousi suggested a finish on the Champs-Élysées.
On the face of this coin, a Tour de France cyclist is shown with his fist raised, as a sign of victory. Behind him is the symbol of the Avenue des Champs-Elysées: the Arc de Triomphe. On the left, a vintage cyclist is depicted in drawing, a reference to the participants in the 1975 Tour de France. The outline of the coin and the spokes are reminiscent of a bicycle wheel. The Tour de France logo is on the right, the yeardate on the left, and the hallmarks are inscribed in the inner tube.
