This release celebrates the 600th anniversary of both Katholieke Universiteit Leuven & Université Catholique de Louvain, which grew out of the medieval University of Leuven, founded in 1425.

The original University of Leuven (Universitas Lovaniensis) was founded at the centre of the historic town of Leuven (or Louvain) in 1425, making it the first university in Belgium and the Low Countries. In 1968, the Catholic University of Leuven split into the Dutch-language Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, which stayed in Leuven, and the French-language Université Catholique de Louvain, which moved to Louvain-la-Neuve in Wallonia, 30 km southeast of Brussels.

The reverse shows the Sedes sapientiae statue of Leuven, representing St Mary with the infant Jesus on her lap. The background is filled with scientifically inspired line drawings; in the upper circle is the text: SEDES SAPIENTIAE ORA PRO NOBIS [Seat of Wisdom, pray for us ], below that UCLOUVAIN 1425 2025 KU LEUVEN.

The obverse features an effigy of HM King Philip
