An unmissable spectacle that announces the arrival of spring with a magnificent burst of color, the mass flowering of the narcissus both brightens the landscape after the cold, dark winter and is a potent symbol of new beginnings. Also known as the daffodil, the flower blooms anew every year, embodying the eternal cycle of nature and reminding us that life is full of opportunities.

Not just beautiful to look at, the narcissus is also a flower of legend. In Greek mythology, Narcissus was the beautiful youth who perished after falling in love with his own reflection in a pool and ended up changing into the flower that bears his name. This story serves as a warning against the dangers of vanity but can also be interpreted as an invitation to self-discovery. Those who recognize and embrace their own light gain true self-confidence – not from arrogance, but from a healthy sense of self-worth.

In the spectacular Ausseerland region of central Austria, the narcissus is celebrated in grand style every year. At the Narzissenfest, Austria’s largest flower festival, the delicate bloom of the star shaped narcissus takes center stage. The highlight of the multi-day event is the magnificent parade of elaborate floral sculptures. Lovingly crafted with great attention to detail, these figures – ranging from animals and mythical creatures to traditional motifs – are paraded through the streets before being gently floated across the lake.

The Narcissus coin’s reverse features four narcissi in bloom, representing the three species of the flower that are native to Austria. Depicted on the left is the star-shaped narcissus (narcissus radiiflorus), while the white daffodil, also known as the poet's narcissus (narcissus poeticus), is depicted in the centre and the wild daffodil, also known as the Lent lily (narcissus pseudonarcissus), is on the right.

On the obverse of the nine-sided coin, Austria’s nine provincial coats of arms are arranged in a circular pattern.
