On October 27, 2025 Amsterdam will celebrate its 750th anniversary. The anniversary year runs from from October 27, 2024 to October 27, 2025 and will be filled with festivities and events that celebrate the city's historic journey and contemporary cultural, artistic and social achievements. Planned events include historic reconstructions, exhibitions, public art installations and festivals that reflect the city's diverse and inclusive spirit.
The origins of Amsterdam date back to 1275, when the city was granted city rights, marked by the construction of Dam in the Amstel River that allowed it grow into a major trading center. During the Middle Ages city trade flourished, and in the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century it became the richest city in the Western world. The iconic canals from this period attract millions of visitors each year.
In the 19th and 20th centuries the industrial revolution brought modernization, and the city played a significant role during World War II. After the war, there was a cultural liberation symbolic of the 1960s and 1970s, making Amsterdam a symbol of tolerance and diversity.
Today, Amsterdam is known for its high quality of life, cultural heritage and as a major player on the world stage. Its artistic legacy lives on in world-class museums such as the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum.
The reverse consists of two parts, where the matte finish half has the image of an old pair of pliers from 1350 with the Amsterdam Coat of Arms on it - rumored to be the very first time that the city Coat of Arms was used. The other, shinier half contains modern typography, which has been used to write the text ‘750 jaar Amsterdam’ and the years 1275-2025. Both parts come together by using the three crosses from the Amsterdam Coat of Arms in the center. The obverse shows King Willem-Alexander drawn similar to how former monarchs were portrayed on Dutch coins.
