Issued on November 1, this is the official coin issue to commemorate the passing of the crown from Queen Margrethe II to her eldest son, now King Frederik X.

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark announced her abdication on December 31, 2023, and it became effective on January 14, 2024. She cited back surgery and other health issues as reasons for her decision. Queen Margrethe II's abdication was the first voluntary abdication of a Danish monarch in almost 900 years. Her 52-year reign was the longest in Danish history. Queen Margrethe II was known for her warm manners, linguistic talents, and design skills. She was also a keen skier and served in a Danish women's air force unit as a princess.

The reverse features a portrait of King Frederik X in a right-facing profile. Along the outer edge are the words: FREDERIK X • DANMARKS KONGE • 2024 (FREDERIK X • KING OF DENMARK • 2024). In the inner ring you'll see the King's motto: FORBUNDNE • FORPLIGTET • FOR KONGERIGET DANMARK (UNITED • COMMITTED • FOR THE KINGDOM OF DENMARK). The mint mark (a heart) will be at the bottom of the coin, along the outer edge. The initials of Danmarks Nationalbank’s general treasurer and chief designer will also appear here.

The obverse features a portrait of Queen Margrethe II in profile, facing right. Along the outer edge are the words: MARGRETHE II • DANMARKS DRONNING. In the inner ring you'll find the dates of the Queen's reign: 14 JANUARY 1972 - 14 JANUARY 2024. At the bottom is the denomination: 20 KRONER.

Regular circulation coins featuring a monogram and portrait of King Frederik X are expected to be issued in the second half of 2025.
