This release honors the 500th anniversary of the death of Croatian writer and poet, Marko Marulic.
Marko Marulić Splićanin (1450-1524) was a Croatian poet, lawyer, judge, and Renaissance humanist. He is the national poet of Croatia and has a position in Croatian literature comparable to Dante in Italian literature. Marulik's vernacular verse marked the beginnings of a distinctive Croatian literature.
The design features a portrait of the Croatian writer Marko Marulić, whose literary heritage has a historical and cultural relevance for the Republic of Croatia. This is similar to the main design on the obverse side of the old 500-kuna banknote. In addition, you will find the symbol for the Republic of Croatia “HR”, the year of issuance “2024.” and the name and surname of Marko Marulić “MARKO MARULIĆ”, inscribed along the coin’s inner edge. The coin’s outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.
