This set consists of the uncirculated R5, R2, R1, 50c, 20c and 10c circulation coins, and is the first release in the fourth decimal coin series.

The fourth decimal coin series became legal tender on January 1, 2023. This coin series is based on the theme of deep ecology, an ecological philosophy that considers humankind as an integral part of its environment.

As with the previous coin series, all of South Africa’s 11 official languages are used on the fourth decimal coin series. On the R1 coin only one language is used, while three languages appear on the R5 coin and two on the R2, 50c, 20c and 10c coins. To ensure the use of all 11 languages, the coins will be minted over a set period on a rotational system basis.

Each of the reverses features the face value as well as a plant, animal, or insect design. They include the southern right whale (5 Rand), springbok (2 Rand), king protea (1 Rand), knysna turaco (50 cent), bitter aloe (20 cent), and a honey bee (10 cent).

Five of the obverses feature South Africa's coat-of-arms as the design, an eagle on a shield that bears two human figures. The one Rand coin differs, as it bears the South African flag. This marks the first time that the nation's flag has been struck on a coin that was minted for circulation.
