Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) was a Renaissance polymath, active as a mathematician, astronomer, and Catholic canon, who formulated a model of the universe that placed the Sun rather than Earth at its center.

The design depicts a profile portrait of Copernicus, together with a stylized heliocentric representation of the universe as proposed by Copernicus.

The obverse’s outer ring bears the 12 stars of the European flag.
