Charlemagne (Charles I, Charles the Great)(747—814), king of the Franks (768–814), king of the Lombards (774–814), and first emperor (800–814) of the Romans and of what was later called the Holy Roman Empire. He was responsible for uniting most of Europe under his rule by power of the sword, for helping to restore the Western Roman Empire and becoming its first emperor, and for facilitating a cultural and intellectual renaissance, the ramifications of which were felt in Europe for centuries afterward.
The obverse features the personal monogram of the emperor, blended with the octagon shape of the dome of the Aachen Cathedral, where Charlemagne was buried in 814. The inscriptions say KARL DER GROßE (Charlemagne/Charles the Great), and 748-814
The reverse shows the standard eurozone design for the two-euro coins; the numeral 2 superimposed over a map depicting Europe, created by Belgian artist Luc Luycx.
The coin has been minted by all the five national or state mints: Berlin (A), Munich (D), Stuttgart (F), Karlsruhe (G), Hamburg (J).
