Finland's first Nature Conservation Act, enacted in 1923, was ahead of its time and continues to enjoy a central role within the 100-year-old law.
The beetle (Tragosoma depsarium) depicted on the obverse side of the special euro coin reminds us of the importance of the Nature Conservation Act. The longhorn beetle is classified as a highly endangered species in Finland. Beetles work at various levels of the ecosystem and are thereby an important group in terms of the functioning of biodiversity as a whole. The coin’s outer ring bears the 12 stars of the European flag.
The common reverse has a map of Europe with the denomination shown in Latin characters.
