This issue honors the 200th anniversary of the death of the Italian sculptor Antonio Canova.

Antonio Canova (1757–1822) is considered the greatest Neoclassical sculptor of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Canova was credited with ushering in a new aesthetic of clear, regularized form and calm repose inspired by classical antiquities. He was also renowned for his carving abilities and the refinement of his marble surfaces, which seemed as supple as real flesh.

The reverse shows the sculpture of the goddess Hebe, a work that Canova made between 1796 and 1817 in four copies today preserved respectively in Berlin, St. Petersburg, Chatsworth and Forlì. The sculptures of Hebe were initially criticized for Canova's stylistic choices, which included combining bronze details to the marble and covering the white marble with a pink patina. However, these sculptures of balance and absolute elegance are today considered among the highest works of neoclassicism.
