Seventy years ago, on February 6, 1952, Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth of Nations.
Malta was a British colony from 1800 to 1964. After this, the country still belonged to the Commonwealth of Nations until it became a republic in 1974. Queen Elizabeth lived in Malta from 1949 to 1951, before she was crowned. She had just married Prince Philip, who was stationed in Malta as a naval officer.
The obverse features the anniversary emblem surrounded by the inscription “Queen's Platinum Jubilee” and the denomination. On the reverse is the logo of the Central Bank of Malta, the mint mark and the year of issue.
