This release honors the bicentennial of the death of Italian sculptor Antonio Canova (1757-1822).

Antonio Canova is considered the greatest Neoclassical sculptor of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He was credited with ushering in a new aesthetic of clear, regularized form and calm repose inspired by classical antiquities. Canova was also renowned for his carving abilities and the refinement of his marble surfaces, which seemed as supple as real flesh.

The obverse features a detail from a bust considered a self-portrait of Antonio Canova, flanked by the Canovian coat of arms with the heraldic emblem of the Marquisate of Ischia di Castro in Latium. These works of the Italian sculptor and painter are both exhibited on his tomb in the Canovian Temple at Possagno, Treviso. The reverse shows a detail from the marble statue “Venus Italica” by Antonio Canova, which is preserved in the Palatine Gallery of Florence.
