In 2022, it’s 150 years ago Piet Mondrian was born.

When you think of Piet Mondrian (1872-1944), you immediately picture the characteristic line play with primary colors that made the artist so well-known and world famous. Although he is best known for his abstract paintings made from squares and rectangles, Piet Mondriaan started out painting realistic scenes. He especially liked painting trees.

Like his forms, Mondrian reduced his name from Pieter Cornelius Mondriaan to Piet Mondrian, distancing himself from his Dutch roots. Although still occasionally referred to as “Mondriaan,” the artist officially dropped the second “a” from his name in 1911, rendering it a very appropriate anagram; “I Paint Modern.”
