The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2022 the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA 2022). FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) is the lead agency for celebrating the year in collaboration with other relevant organizations and bodies of the United Nations system.
For a country such as Greece, its history has been very closely tied to the harvest of the sea literally for more than 5000 years. The ancient Greeks were known as sea farers and shipbuilders as well as travelling far and wide in search of a variety of fish. Today, the contribution of small fisheries is considerably great, with the catches not only satisfying the demand domestically but collectively, Greek fishermen managed to export over 200,000 tonnes of fish products last year, earning nearly one billion dollars in revenue.
The reverse design is based on an ancient fresco found in Akrotiri, referred to as The Young fisherman with his catch. It was painted in 1650 BC and discovered by archaeologists who recovered this fresco in the Cyclades on the volcanic island of Santorini. This well-preserved painting shows a nude male fisherman holding his abundant catch of the day in both hands.
The obverse depicts a stylised collage of shapes representing a school of fish swimming in one direction.
