The 16th and last release in the annual German Federation series features Thuringia.

The design features Wartburg castle in Eisenach. The castle, the first such structure of its kind in Germany, was named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.

The federal states series consists of a total of 16 different €2 coins, each one bearing a unique symbol or building specific to the respective state. The series began in 2006 and a new coin is minted each year, in order of the rotating presidency of the Bundesrat (the upper house of the German parliament representing the federal states).
