This commemorative coin highlights the importance of Finnish climate research.
The Finns are world leading in research on, among other things, Arctic climate, greenhouse gas emissions and the carbon balance of forests and the ground.
The obverse depicts beard lichen composed like a root-like branching network. The insightful motif and its shape can also be interpreted as representing the lungs — reminding us of the importance of air quality and its study. The text included shown on either side of the beard lichen reads ILMASTOTUTKIMUS (Finnish) and KLIMATFORSKNING (Swedish), meaning “Climate Research” in Finland’s two official languages.
The coin’s outer ring bears the 12 stars of the European flag. |
