2022 marks the 150th anniversary of the foundation of the Belgian shipping company Red Star Line.

Red Star Line was established in 1872 and offered weekly crossings from Antwerp to New York City. Later also from Antwerp to Philadelphia, sometimes with a stopover in Liverpool or Southampton in the United Kingdom. Between 1873 and 1934 a total of some two million emigrants made the crossing with Red Star Line.

The coin design shows a representation of the SS Belgenland. This luxury cruiseship sailed for Red Star Line from 1923 to 1934. On the coin, the ship is sailing with the logo of the Belgian shipping company. The star is flanked on the left by the Antwerp skyline and on the right by that of New York City.
