The grounds of the Japan Mint contain many different varieties of flowering cherry trees. Every year, during the cherry blossom (sakura) season, a path through its grounds approximately 560 m long is opened to the public for cherry blossom viewing. This event is known as “Sakura-no-toorinuke,” literally meaning walking through the cherry blossom, because people walk along a one-way path while viewing the cherry blossoms. Since its inception in 1883, it has remained popular as one of Osaka’s best-loved spring traditions.

The cherry blossom of the year is “Fukurokuju," a cultivated variety developed from the Oshima zakura cherry tree and originally grown on the banks of the Arakawa River in Tokyo. Its flowers are damask pink, and the petals have undulating grooves that give them a stiff appearance. The variety is known for its large flowers, with each flower having 15 to 20 petals.

Highly limited and hard to find outside of Japan, this set is limited to 45,000 sets issued - but ONLY 592 sets were earmarked for markets outside of Japan!!
