The British Royal Mint’s continuing Music Legends Collection shines a spotlight on British music icons that we all know and love. This release for David Bowie follows releases for Queen and Elton John, and precedes releases for The Who, The Rolling Stones, Dame Shirley Bassey, the Police, George Michael, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Iron Maiden, Freddie Mercury and Spice Girls.
David Bowie was a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, actor, writer, painter, and sculptor. Through his long career, Bowie sold over 100 million records. Some of his best known works include Ziggy Stardust, Heroes, Life on Mars, Let's Dance, Changes and his collaboration with Queen on the song "Under Pressure".
Born David Robert Jones in 1947, Bowie started playing the saxophone at an early age and showed an interest in modern jazz. For his early perfromances he used the stage name Davy Jones, but changed it to avoid confusion with the actor Davy Jones, who had found success with The Monkees. Bowie chose to name himself after the Bowie knife as "it cuts both ways".
Bowie is undoubtedly one of the most influential musicians in modern history, known for his creative style, his innovative and constantly evolving music, and for being a true pioneering visionary.
The reverse is dominated by a depiction of David Bowie, a lightning bolt inspired by the Aladdin Sane album, glittering stars and a dynamic inscription symbolize Bowie's dazzling career. The obverse has the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
Presented in bespoke packaging recounting David Bowie's incredible career.
