The University of Ljubljana opened its doors on December 3, 1919, a few months after the promulgation of the university law by the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes.

The founding of the university made it easier for Slovenian students to get the chance to study, since the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy meant they could no longer study at Austrian universities, and established the foundation for the development of the sciences in Slovenia.
