This issue celebrates the 70th anniversary of the Italian constitution, which came into force on the 1st January 1948

Italy’s post-war constitution was especially important as it recognised two significant changes to the country. First, it was written after the national referendum which decided the future of the Italian monarchy, which was also held on the 2nd June 1946. Second, the constitution would define the direction of the country after its disastrous participation in the Second World War and would specifically determine the responsibilities of both the head of state and the head of government to deter any further instances of dominance from either office.



The obverse depicts a recreation of the moment when Italy’s Interim Head of State Enrico De Nicola signed the law which enacted the Constitution of the Italian Republic on the December 27, 1947. To his right was Prime Minister Alcide De Gasperi, and to his left, Umberto Terracini, president of the Constituent Assembly.
