This issue is dedicated to the city of Leeuwarden, which in 2018 is European Capital of Culture - an honor shared with Valletta, Malta.

The city of Leeuwarden is a city with an exciting history and a vibrant future. It is the capital city of the province of Friesland, and is located in the northern part of Holland. Perhaps the most famous, or rather infamous individual to come from Leeuwarden was the dancer-turned-spy, Mata Hari. She was later executed by the firing squad in France on charges of espionage for Germany. Unfortunately, her birthplace was recently destroyed in a fire. The city of Leeuwarden is home to some important activities and structures. The largest cattle market in the Netherlands is located in the city. There is also a flower market held in the city on Ascension Day, which is said to be the largest one in the Netherlands. At one time there were over 130 windmills standing in the city. Today, there is only one surviving windmill. Although there are a couple of other foundations still standing, the Froskepolemolen windmill is the only complete structure left to bear witness to the past.

Leeuwarden endured extensive occupation during the Second World War. In a dramatic turn of events, the Royal Canadian Dragoons attacked, defeated, and drove out the Germans while disobeying direct orders to the contrary. In memory of this heroic event, it is said that the Royal Canadian Dragoons still fly the flag of the city in whatever location they are currently stationed.

As with so many other cities in this region, WWII also brought with it the deportation and extermination of the Jewish population. Many who were deported never returned and life for the Jewish communities was never the same after the war.

Leeuwarden is a former royal residence and has a historic city center with many historically relevant buildings.
