This coin was issued in remembrance of the 75th anniversary of the death of Kostis Palamas (1859-1943). Palamas is remembered as one of the primary writers that revitalised modern Greek poetry and became a towering figure in Greek literary life. He was an ardent supporter of demotic, or vernacular Greek, and contributed decisively to its recognition as a poetic medium. His funeral in 1943 was attended by thousands of Athenians, and the sizable gathering, at a time when large crowds of people on the streets was prohibited by Nazi occupiers, turned into a massive demonstration against both the invasion and occupation by the armies of the Third Reich.
