Simone Veil (1927-2017) is arguably the one person most responsible for advancing women’s legal rights in France during the 20th and 21st centuries. The law legalizing abortion that went into effect on January 17, 1975 - the law that she proposed and fought for in the French Parliament - rightfully bears her name.
Arrested by the occupying German forces in 1944, Veil was deported with her family to the Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz, and later moved to Bergen-Belsen. Her parents and brother all died in the camps, but Simone and her two sisters survived.
After the war she served as a minister in several governments and was president of the European parliament between 1979 and 1982. Veil was repeatedly voted as one of France’s most trusted and popular figures.
Veil’s death in 2017 sparked a wave of emotion in France, with thousands signing a petition requesting she be buried in the Panthéon, which has become the final resting place for the country’s most illustrious citizens. Simone Veil was buried together with her husband, Antoine Veil, on July 1, 2018. She is only the fifth woman to be laid to rest with State honors.
