Many say that the tango’s blending of passion and melancholy perfectly expresses the Finnish soul.

The tango was introduced to Finland more than a century ago by a Finnish ballet dancer, Toivo Niskanen, who learned his classical steps in St. Petersburg, then the Russian capital. But he became enamored of the tango while visiting Paris.

The tango flourished in Finland to the point of almost becoming the national dance. To this day, about 2,000 tango clubs thrive across a nation of 5.5 million people, and the annual tango festival in Seinajoki is one of the largest anywhere, easily drawing crowds of more than 100,000 people.

An overwhelming majority of Finns voted Satumaa (the Fairytale Land) as their favorite tango, and the design illustrates floating on the waves of the notes to Satumaa. Satumaa, which was written by Unto Mononen and published in 1955, is the quintessential Finnish tango.

The obverse honors both the music and the dance: in the left foreground, a man in a jacket and open-collar shirt is singing as he faces the view, while behind him to the right a couple dance alongside a body of water, beneath a brooding sky. The surrounding legend reads SUOMALAINEN TANGO • FINSK TANGO Finnish Tango in Finnish and Swedish). The reverse depicts lyrics from Satumaa at the center, surrounded by concentric circles that suggest both a blank staff from a sheet of music and the grooves of a vinyl record album.
