The Royal Mint of Belgium in Brussels is ending operations as of Jan. 1, 2018, and the contract for producing Belgian euro coins will be assigned elsewhere through a bidding process. Therefore, this is part of the last coin issues struck in Belgium by the Royal Mint.

Founded in 1817, UGent is currently one of the largest Flemish universities, consisting of 41,000 students and 9,000 staff members. In 1930, it became the first Dutch-speaking university in Belgium, whereas French had previously been the standard academic language.

The total issue limit for all qualities of this coin is 200,000 coins. Very few of the regular uncirculated condition have been released through commercial banks in Belgium.

The coin card has one side with French text and one side with Dutch text. The obverse of the coin faces a specific language on approx. half the coins, making them have two versions according to which language is featured with the thematic side of the coin.
