This issue honors the 125th anniversary of Nelly Sachs, the Jewish German poet, playwright and Nobel Prize Laureate whose experiences resulting from the rise of the Nazis in World War II Europe transformed her into a poignant spokeswoman for the grief and yearnings of her fellow Jews.

The expressive, artistic reverse design focuses on a topic that is central to the works of Nelly Sachs. Her poem "Kommt einer von Ferne" ("Somebody comes from afar"), which is the inspiration for the coin, addresses the matters of coming to terms with the holocaust, with expulsion and persecution.

The obverse features an eagle framed by the words “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND”, the value and denomination, the letter “F” for the federal mint in Stuttgart, the year 2016, and the twelve stars of Europe. In addition, the words "SILBER 925" are minted on the coin.

This is also the second issue from Germany since it was decided to change the denomination from €10 to €20, return the silver content to 92.5% Sterling, and again mint the circulating uncirculated version in a silver alloy since it was changed to base metal in 2011.
