Only 20 years ago, the song “Ons Heemecht”, with music by Jean Antoine Zinnen and lyrics by Michel Lentz, was recognised as Luxembourg's official national anthem by the Chamber of Deputies.
While the song had long been the country's national song, it was only then that it received its official status and protection.
The words of “Ons Heemecht” date back to 1859, with the music added to the poem in 1864, when the song is thought to have first been performed in Ettelbrück.
For a while, there was a rival national song, called “De Feierwon”, also by Lentz. While it was “Ons Heemecht” that prevailed as the national anthem, “De Feierwon” gave birth to the Grand Duchy's motto “Mir wëlle bleiwe wat mir sin” (We want to stay what we are), which is the final verse of the song's chorus.
In 1993, the centenary of Lentz' death, the first and fourth stanza were raised to national anthem status. Meanwhile, the “Wilhelmus” is the Grand Ducal anthem.
