The work of Dutch painters is both timeless and world-renowned. It is often the highlight in art museums across the globe and works frequently sell for millions of dollars. From the realism of the masters of the Golden Age such as Vermeer, Frans Hals and Rembrandt, to Van Gogh’s legendary post-impressionism, and on to the modern school exemplified by Piet Mondrian, the small nation of the Netherlands leaves an imprint on the art world second to none.

Dutch law requires the portrait of Queen Beatrix to appear on the obverse of every legal tender coin. Rarely has this been so cleverly accomplished as here, where she is seen looking through a window at the "View of Delft", the 1660-1661 Jan Vermeer painting, as if in a museum. The reverse depicts an exterior view of the same scene, with the painting now forming the background and a closed window in the middle.
