The Ostrobothnian coin evokes the vast northern flatlands and the honest, determined Ostrobothnian people.
The Ostrobothnian provincial coin depicts tar resins and the heart of a stone-covered tar-burning pit, as tar burning is an old Ostrobothnian industry. The reverse side of the Ostrobothnian provincial coin shows the region's historic coat of arms, which dates back to the medieval fiefdoms. Administratively the historic provinces ceased to exist in 1634 when the country, then a part of Sweden, was divided into counties.
